Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we are doing.
A quote by Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia founder (2004)
We can build our own knowledge base within the school and in particular the ICT department. Before we go that route, we need to consider that Wikipedia is a valuable resource that can now be trusted. In the past due to its open structure, anyone could modify its content which means that some data could be incorrect. Due to the value and pride some authors have in the concept, any errors are normally corrected within minutes of any spurious errors appearing.
Philosophically, wikis can play havoc with the traditional ideas of copy-right and intellectual property due to this open-source approach, as we as users share ownership of the information, whwere the idea of collective produced product is more important than personal or commercial ownership. Such collaboration should set a good example to our students and some useful skills for their future.
